Answers and step-by-step fixes from the official Westinghouse manual.
Which light is on?
- Low Oil LED: Oil level is too low. The oil in the crankcase has dropped below the safe level, so the engine has shut itself off to protect it.
- Overload LED (red): Generator is overloaded. The inverter has switched off all AC output because of an overload or a short circuit in a connected appliance. The engine keeps running.
- Output Ready LED (green): Generator is producing power normally. This light comes on when the generator is running correctly and sending power to the outlets.
- Battery Indicator: Unit is powered on. This light stays on the whole time the generator's battery switch is in the ON position.
- Start indicator flashing green: Remote key fob is in pairing mode. The generator is waiting to pair with a remote start key fob.
Common problems
The generator won't start
- Is the battery switch ON? Turn the battery switch to the ON position.
- Is there fuel in the tank? Refuel the generator with fresh gasoline.
- Could the fuel be old or bad? Drain the fuel tank and refill with fresh gasoline, especially if the generator sat stored with old fuel in it.
- Is the air filter dirty? A clogged air filter can keep the engine from starting. Clean it before trying again.
The engine starts, then shuts off
- Is the generator out of fuel? Refuel the generator.
- Is the oil level correct? Check the engine oil level and top it up if it is low.
- Is the air filter dirty? Clean the air filter.
- Is the fuel contaminated? Drain the fuel tank and refill with fresh gasoline.
There's no power at the outlets
- Is the OVERLOAD light on and OUTPUT READY off? This means the generator shut off AC output to protect itself. Reset it before reconnecting loads.
- Have the AC circuit breakers tripped? Check what is plugged in, then reset the tripped breaker(s).
- Is the connected tool or appliance faulty? Replace or repair the tool or appliance, then stop and restart the engine.
- Could the generator itself be faulty? If nothing above fixes it, contact Westinghouse customer service.
The engine lacks power or runs rough under load
- Is the air filter restricted? Clean or replace the air filter.
- Is the generator overloaded? Unplug some devices to reduce the load.
- Is a connected tool or appliance faulty? Replace or repair the tool or appliance, then stop and restart the engine.
- Could the fuel be bad or old? Drain the tank and refuel with fresh gasoline, especially after long storage.
Step-by-step guides
Change the engine oil
- Place the generator on a level surface and let the engine cool for several minutes.
- Remove the engine service cover.
- Disconnect the spark plug wire and place it where it cannot touch the spark plug.
- Remove the oil access cover, then remove and wipe the dipstick clean.
- Remove the rubber plug under the oil drain bolt and place a container under the drain hole.
- Using a 10mm wrench, remove the oil drain bolt and let the oil drain out.
- Install the oil drain bolt and tighten it securely, then replace the rubber plug.
- Slowly pour in fresh oil, stopping often to check the level.
- Replace the dipstick, reconnect the spark plug wire, and install the engine service cover.
Clean the air filter
- Place the generator on a level surface and let the engine cool for several minutes.
- Remove the engine service cover.
- Turn the knobs on the air cleaner cover to unlocked and tip the cover down to remove it.
- Remove the foam filter and wash it in warm water with household detergent soap, squeezing it slowly.
- Rinse the filter in fresh water with a slow squeezing action, then let it dry fully.
- Dip the dry foam filter in clean engine oil, then squeeze out all excess oil.
- Install the filter in the housing and lock the air cleaner cover back in place.
- Install the engine service cover.
Reset an overload
- Turn off and unplug all connected electrical loads.
- Push the RESET button on the control panel until OVERLOAD goes off and OUTPUT READY lights up.
- Reset any AC circuit breakers that are off.
- Check that your running and surge loads do not exceed the generator's capacity.
- Reconnect loads one at a time, letting the generator stabilize after each one.
