Weber Genesis II SP-435 GBS
Answers and step-by-step fixes from the official Weber manual.
Common problems
Burner won't light with the push-button igniter
- Does the burner light with a match? This tells you whether gas is actually reaching the burner before you blame the igniter.
- Did the match light it but the push button still won't? If gas flow is fine, the problem is in the electronic ignition system itself.
- Is there a plastic wrap left on the battery, or is it old? A plastic protective wrap, a wrongly fitted battery, or an old battery will stop the ticking sound.
- Are the ignition wires connected securely? Loose wires at the ignition button or the ignition module will stop the igniter working.
Grill won't get hot enough or heats unevenly
- Did you turn on the gas before all the knobs were off? Turning on the cylinder with a knob already open, or opening the cylinder too fast, can trip the regulator's safety flow limiter.
- Is the LPG cylinder low or empty? A nearly empty cylinder can't supply enough gas for full heat.
- Is the fuel hose bent or kinked? A kink in the hose restricts gas flow to the burners.
- Are the burner ports dirty? Clogged ports give an erratic or low flame even on the high setting.
You smell gas or hear a hissing sound
- Are the spider screens on the burners blocked? Dust, debris, or insect webs on the screens can cause a lazy yellow flame along with a gas smell.
- Could the rubber seal in the cylinder valve be damaged? A damaged seal can let gas escape with a light hissing sound.
Flare-ups, or flaky bits inside the lid
- Did you skip preheating? Leftover food from the last meal causes flare-ups if the grill isn't preheated properly.
- Does the inside need a thorough clean? The flakes on the lid are just carbonised grease, not a defect, but built-up grease inside causes flare-ups.
Step-by-step guides
Check the gas connections for leaks
- Mix a soap and water solution.
- Turn the gas supply on at the cylinder.
- Wet each fitting with the soap and water solution.
- Watch for bubbles forming at the fittings.
- If no bubbles appear, turn the gas off and rinse the connections with water.
Light a burner with a match
- Open the grill lid.
- Check that all burner control knobs, including the side burner, are in the off position.
- Turn the gas supply on at the cylinder.
- Put a match in the matchstick holder and strike it.
- Insert the lit match down through the cooking grates, next to the burner.
- Push the burner control knob in and slowly turn it toward start/high.
- Check that the burner is lit through the cooking grates and the FLAVORIZER bar cutout.
- If it doesn't light within 4 seconds, turn the knob off and wait before trying again.
Check the electronic ignition system
- Press the ignition button and listen for a ticking sound.
- Check that any plastic protective wrap has been removed from the battery.
- Confirm the battery is installed correctly.
- Replace the battery if it is old.
- Check the ignition wires are connected securely to the terminals under the control panel.
- Make sure the ignition wires are properly attached to the ignition module.
