Answers and step-by-step fixes from the official Miele manual.
What does the display say?
- F1, F2, F3, F4, F80, F81, F82, F83: Internal fault. The machine has an internal fault.
- F74, F77, F225, F226, F235, F236: Internal fault. The machine has an internal fault.
- F73 or Check the brew unit: Brew unit problem. The brew unit cannot be positioned correctly, or it is dirty, so the coffee cannot be made.
- F227, F228, F229, F230, F233: Dispenser adjustment fault. There is a fault with the automatic height adjustment of the main dispenser.
- F234: Cup not recognized three times. The cup protection switch-off has triggered three times because the cup or glass is not recognized.
- Too much ground coffee: Too much ground coffee added. More than one scoop of ground coffee was put in the chute and the brew unit could not process it.
- Push the water container in until it engages: Water tank not seated. The water tank is not sitting properly in the machine.
- Descale: Machine needs descaling. Lime scale has built up and the machine must be descaled before you can make more drinks.
- Degrease the brew unit: Brew unit needs degreasing. After 200 drinks the brew unit needs degreasing to prevent blockages from coffee oils.
- Clean the milk pipework: Milk pipework needs cleaning. About once a week the milk pipework must be cleaned to stop bacteria building up.
- Empty the drip tray: Drip tray full or sensor dirty. The drip tray is full, or its sensor contacts are soiled so it reads full even when empty.
- Fill and replace the water container: Tank message even though filled. This message can appear even with a full tank when the machine actually needs descaling.
- Fill and insert milk container: Milk flask not detected. The milk flask lid may be dirty, so the sensor cannot tell the flask is inserted.
Common problems
The machine won't turn on
- Did you hold the On/Off button long enough? A short tap isn't enough; hold the button for at least 3 seconds.
- Is the plug fully in the outlet? Push the plug all the way into the electrical outlet.
- Has a fuse tripped? A fuse may have tripped due to the machine, the voltage, or another appliance. Contact an electrician or Miele Service.
The coffee tastes or looks wrong
- Is the coffee not hot enough? Pre-heat the cup first, especially small thick-walled cups.
- Is the crema pale, dark or uneven? Adjust the grinder to a finer or coarser setting depending on the crema.
- Are the coffee beans old? Old beans affect the crema and taste. Use fresh beans.
- Is the heating-up time getting longer? This is a sign the machine needs descaling.
No milk froth, or milk sprays out
- Is the milk cold? Good froth only happens with cold milk, below 50°F (10°C).
- Is the milk flask pushed in all the way? A loose flask lets air in along with the milk.
- Is the milk pipework in the lid clean? Take the lid apart and clean it with the brush provided.
- Could the elbow connector be blocked? If only hot milk comes out instead of froth after checking everything else, the elbow connector may need exchanging.
The door is hard to open or close
- Are all the containers pushed all the way in? Check the water tank, waste unit and other containers are fully seated.
- Are the door hinges misaligned? If the hinges aren't aligned right, the door becomes hard to open or close.
- Is the main dispenser connector cap greased? A dry cap can jam in the brew unit. Grease it regularly.
