Miele CVA 3650
Answers and step-by-step fixes from the official Miele manual.
What does the display say?
- Descale - Start: The machine must be descaled now. The machine has reached its descaling limit and will not make drinks until descaling is complete.
- No. of portions until descaling: 50: Descaling will soon be needed. This countdown message appears after each drink once only 50 portions remain before descaling is required.
- Push water container right in: The machine can't detect the water container. Water has not been taken in, often because the container is not seated correctly or wasn't filled before descaling.
- Check capsule carousel and push the runners right in: The capsule carousel is jammed. The carousel has jammed and cannot turn properly, usually because a capsule is not sitting correctly.
- Fault -72: A capsule is stuck between the carousel and the capsule plate. A coffee capsule has become jammed and needs to be removed by hand.
- Fault -75: Waste container sensors are dirty or a capsule is misplaced. The machine can't read the waste container sensors, or a capsule wasn't pushed onto the capsule plate.
- Fault -76: A capsule is stuck in the brew unit. The capsule was not pushed onto the capsule plate correctly and may be stuck further inside.
- Fault -73, Fault -74 or Fault -77: A general machine fault. One of these fault numbers appears for a machine fault that usually clears with a restart.
- Fault - 1 to Fault - 4, Fault - 80 to Fault - 83: An internal fault has occurred. The machine has detected an internal fault and needs a rest before trying again.
- Memory full: No space left for a new coffee type or user profile. You can only store up to 10 custom coffee types or 9 user profiles.
- Set up successful: First-time setup is complete. This confirms the language, clock and time settings were entered correctly.
- Empty: The selected chamber has no capsules. This chamber is allocated a coffee type but currently has no capsules in it.
- Programme finished: Descaling is complete. The descaling programme has finished and the machine is ready to make drinks again.
- Heating-up phase: The machine is warming up. This shows while the machine heats before it can rinse or make drinks.
- Rinsing: The machine is rinsing the system. Hot water runs out of the spout automatically once the machine has heated up.
- Cappuccinatore being rinsed: The cappuccinatore lid is being rinsed. Hot water flows through the lid to clear milk deposits between full cleans.
- Locked padlock symbol: The System lock is active. A locked padlock symbol shows when a sensor is touched because the child lock is on.
- Stop: You can cancel the drink. This shows while a drink is being prepared, letting you stop it early.
- Double portion?: You can choose a double portion. This appears right after you start a drink, offering a second portion.
Common problems
Coffee or espresso won't come out
- Is the water container pushed in fully? Take it out and push it firmly back into place.
- Is a capsule jammed in the carousel? Open the front, pull out the runners, free the capsules, then push everything back in.
- Is the capsule carousel stuck and not turning? Pull out the runners and check every capsule is sitting correctly before pushing them back in.
Coffee is weak, has grounds in it, or isn't hot enough
- Are there coffee grounds in the cup? The brew unit is dirty and needs cleaning.
- Has the machine made about 15,000 coffees? The capsule hopper in the brew unit may need replacing.
- Is the programmed portion size too large? Reduce the amount of water programmed for that drink.
- Have the cup and system been pre-warmed? Pre-warm small, thick cups especially, for hotter coffee or milk.
No froth from the cappuccinatore
- Is the milk spout pulled out? Pull it out so milk froths in the cappuccinatore jug instead of straight into the cup.
- Are the valve and spout fitted correctly in the lid? Check they are positioned as shown, with no gap in the lid.
- Is a part of the cappuccinatore blocked? Check all the components for blockages and clean them.
Machine has stopped and is asking to be descaled
- Does the display show Descale - Start? The machine will not make drinks again until the descaling programme is run through to the end.
- Has the portions-until-descaling count been running down? This warning appears after each drink once you're close to the limit.
- Is heating-up time getting longer or the water amount wrong? This is a sign the machine needs descaling even without a message.
Step-by-step guides
Descale the machine
- Touch OK to start the descaling programme.
- Take out the water container and fill it to the k mark with lukewarm water.
- Drop in 2 descaling tablets and let them dissolve fully before closing the lid.
- When prompted, remove the capsule plate and fit the coloured descaling funnel.
- Wait for the descaling procedure to start while the tablets finish dissolving.
- Let the programme run; water and descaling agent will drain from the spouts in stages.
- When prompted, rinse the water container out thoroughly and refill it with clean tap water to the mark.
- Empty the waste container and drip tray as they fill during the rinse.
- Touch OK once the display shows the programme has finished.
Rinse the system
- Go to the maintenance menu using the right arrow sensor.
- Select Rinse the system and touch OK; water will run from the spout.
- Open the steam valve and let water run out.
- Close the steam valve a few seconds later.
Clean the cappuccinatore
- Dismantle the cappuccinatore lid and clean all the parts.
- Wash the parts, ideally in the dishwasher as all parts are dishwasher-safe.
- Reassemble the lid parts as shown.
- Check there is no gap between the two parts of the lid.
- Make sure the reassembled lid is fitted onto the cappuccinatore jug correctly.
